Abstract

To look at other with new eyes. Luke-Acts on a theology of respectThis article deals with the topic of a theology of respect from the perspective of Luke-Acts. Is respect earned or is it a given with being human? First the context within which Luke-Acts communicated is being described. It was a culture of holiness which created stark divisions within Jewish society where some were regarded as more respectable than others in the eyes of God. Luke-Acts’ answer to this is to emphasize that God does not distinguish between people. Subsequently various categories of people are treated to show how this principle is being borne out by Luke-Acts:Gentiles, Samaritans, the poor, tax-collectors, women and sinners. The article closes with a few concluding remarks.
