The Huguenots of South Africa in history and religious identity

Abstract

The first aim of this article is to give an overview of some of the opinions that wereexpressed about the Huguenots of South Africa in history shortly before and after1988 – the tercentenary year of their coming to South Africa. In this regard the aim ofthe article is also to analyse and evaluate some new historical information that wasbrought forward since 1988. The second aim of the article is to make a contributionto the efforts that were undertaken to establish the religious identity and heritageof the Huguenots that came to South Africa. The word “religious” is used in both thesense of their narrower church identity as well as their broader identity in life; in thisregard one can also speak of their spirituality.
